2018 was quite a busy year for the Theta project! Now that the holidays are over we’re all focused on the Theta mainnet launch on March 15th, but before that we’d like to share a quick 2018 recap in pictures.
We kicked off 2018 by airdropping Theta tokens to over 11,000 of our earliest supporters. Soon after, many more learned about Theta for the first time when SLIVER.tv hosted the first every SLIVERlympics streamer tournament, where users donated thousands of Theta tokens to the world’s best streamers like Summit1g and fl0m:
In March we announced the creation of the Theta Media Advisory Council, led by our first video platform partner Samsung VR. Mitch and Tim visited the SVR team in Dallas, led by Andrew Dickerson, to kick off the Theta / Samsung VR integration:
In May, Mitch and Theta were featured in MK newspaper in Korea for the first time. A sign of things to come for Korea’s enthusiasm for the Theta Network!

In June we had our first major milestone: the successful launch of the Theta testnet, including the first integration — a SLIVER.tv channel powered by Theta:

The whole team was excited to wrap up the push to testnet launch day:
The Theta team then made it’s first trip to Asia, including a Seoul meetup with Kyber Network, Zilliqa, IoTeX, and Quantstamp.

Mitch and Jieyi also stopped by Shanghai for the DHVC portfolio company meetup:

In September, the Theta + Samsung VR testnet channel launched — our first 3rd-party Theta integration!

Tim was on hand to demo the Samsung VR testnet channel at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco:

Not long after in November, we also launched a second Theta testnet channel with Korean news channel MBN (note, this channel is geofenced to Korean IP addresses):

Building on the project’s adoption in Korea, Mitch and Wes were invited to lecture on blockchain at KAIST, the #1 ranked engineering school in Korea:

Lastly, in December we announced that Korean video platform Pandora.tv had signed on to integrate the Theta Network:
It was an exciting year for Theta and we’re glad our supportive Theta community was along for the ride! There’s many more developments to come in 2019 as we redefine the way video is shared in communities, and create a more equitable way for EVERYONE in the video ecosystem to benefit. Here’s to a great 2019!
Cheers,
The Theta team
