Theta’s relationship with Japan has been building for years. From THETA receiving regulatory clearance in Japan in 2024 to its enterprise relationship with NTT Digital, now part of NTT DOCOMO GLOBAL, we have established a growing presence in the country.
So it is with great pride that we welcome the Takagi Laboratory and Professor Toru Takagi at Chiba Institute of Technology to our global academic network. The university is led by President Joi Ito, a globally recognized figure in technology and decentralized systems.
Professor Takagi holds a PhD in Engineering from Chiba Institute of Technology and teaches in the Department of Digital Transformation Science as well as the Management Engineering program of the Graduate School of Social Systems Science.
Modeling the World as Systems
The lab’s research uses mathematics, which Professor Takagi describes as a language shared across the world, to understand phenomena found in nature and in society as systems. Those systems are then modeled in a form computers can understand, which makes simulation possible and allows the properties, structure, and behavior of the subject to be examined directly.
The work also extends to game theory, automated proving using artificial intelligence languages, and the structuring of cellular activity.
Professor Takagi’s publications include research on model theory as a foundation for intelligent information systems development, a comparison of specification description between Z notation and model-theory-based information systems development methodology, and the design of data processing systems grounded in model theory. He is a member of academic societies including the Society of Systems Design, the Japan Society for Management Information, and the Information Systems Society of Japan.
A 250-Student Web3 Community, Led from the Top
Professor Takagi runs the university’s Web3 club together with President Joi Ito. The club has over 250 student members, all of whom will have access to Theta EdgeCloud through this partnership.
Having a university president personally co-leading a Web3 student community is rare anywhere in the world. Joi Ito serves as President of Chiba Institute of Technology and as Chief Architect at Digital Garage, and his involvement signals institutional commitment to decentralized technology that goes well beyond a single lab or department.
“We are excited to welcome Chiba Institute of Technology to Theta’s global academic partner network,” said Mitch Liu, CEO and co-founder of Theta Labs. “Chiba Tech’s strong foundation in engineering, AI, and applied research makes it an ideal partner for Theta EdgeCloud. Its active engagement in Web3, including a community of more than 250 students supported by the university president, further demonstrates its commitment to emerging technologies. We look forward to supporting its researchers and students with flexible, scalable GPU infrastructure as they develop and test the next generation of AI technologies.”
Why Theta EdgeCloud
Theta EdgeCloud provides distributed GPU capacity through a global network of more than 30,000 edge nodes, delivering on-demand, high-performance computing resources at a fraction of the cost of traditional cloud infrastructure.
Through this collaboration, the Takagi Laboratory and members of the university’s Web3 club will be able to access decentralized computing resources for AI research, experimentation, simulation, and student-led projects.
“Access to scalable computing infrastructure is increasingly important for advancing AI research and education,” said Professor Toru Takagi of Chiba Institute of Technology. “Through this collaboration with Theta Network, our researchers and students will be able to explore new ideas more efficiently, conduct larger-scale experiments, and pursue practical AI applications using Theta’s globally distributed decentralized AI infrastructure. It will also provide our students with valuable hands-on experience in emerging technologies and help prepare them to contribute to the future of AI and Web3.”
Looking Ahead
As Theta Network’s first academic partner in Japan, Chiba Institute of Technology opens a new chapter for Theta EdgeCloud’s expansion in the country.
Theta Network looks forward to supporting professor Takagi, the Takagi Laboratory, President Joi Ito, and more than 250 students participating in the CIT Web3 Club as they explore new applications in artificial intelligence, decentralized computing, simulation, and Web3.
