For the past several years, Theta Labs has unstaked certain amounts of THETA tokens from the project treasury in order to fund project development, decentralize the Theta protocol, expand the roster of Theta enterprise validators and community nodes.
That strategy has directly fueled the momentum behind Theta EdgeCloud, our hybrid cloud-edge computing platform for AI, media/entertainment and has helped grow our network of enterprise validators, academic partners, and telecom collaborators in the past year.
As we move further into 2026, Theta Network is executing on an ambitious roadmap at the intersection of blockchain and artificial intelligence — one focused on driving real utility for THETA, TFUEL, and TDROP scaling EdgeCloud's compute, inference capabilities and building out the AI agent economy. To execute on this roadmap, Theta Labs plans to once again unstake from its treasury to fund the initiatives driving Theta's growth into 2027 — 30 million THETA out of the total 60 million THETA in treasury including the 15 million that is currently staked with crypto.com.
These funds will support several priorities directly tied to our 2026-2027 roadmap:
- Telecom and global enterprise validators — deepen our strategic focus on the telecom industry, build on partnerships with Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo, Ant Digital-backed ZAN and onboard new global partners to secure and govern the network.
- EdgeCloud compute and inference growth — scale the Inference and Training Engines, integrate with marketplaces like RapidAPI, GPU.io, GetDeploying, launch our MCP server for on-demand APIs, and onboard new customers onto AWS Trainium infrastructure.
- AI agent economy — fund continued development of EdgeCloud AI Agents including the recently launched AI Characters gaming and expand token utility across AI chatbot and support agents.
- Academic Partnerships— support new Theta collaborations and research with AI research labs including University of Oregon, Imperial College London, KAIST, Yonsei University, among others.
- Marketing and business development — continue customer acquisition efforts across academia, professional sports, esports, startups, and high-growth enterprises.
- Ecosystem and community growth — evaluate Theta Hackathon/ThetaCon grants for 2027, and broader developer initiatives.
- Corporate and legal matters -- finance the legal team and process to fight two ex-employee false allegations in merit-less lawsuits.
This annual THETA unstake also continues moving the network toward further decentralization, with Theta Labs reducing its staking percentage from ~48% to ~23% of the total THETA currently staked among all validators and guardians. As with previous unstaking rounds, this step ensures the Theta ecosystem becomes increasingly decentralized and less reliant on Theta Labs over time — reinforcing trust in the Theta blockchain's record while supporting the network's long-term strategic goals.
The entire Theta team is committed and energized by our continued progress and remains confident in Theta's position as the leading decentralized cloud for AI, media, and entertainment. We look forward to sharing updates along the way.
