Theta Edge Node Enters Full Release

Theta Labs · · 1 min read

Theta Edge Node has moved out of beta and is now a fully released part of the Theta ecosystem.

At its core, Edge Node turns an ordinary computer into a worker on the Theta Edge Network, allowing machines to contribute spare resources such as bandwidth, CPU, GPU capacity and storage to help Theta process real workloads across the network. In return, operators earn TFUEL for the resources their machine contributes.

Edge Node supports a range of workloads, including:

  • Video relay and caching – helping distribute video by contributing spare bandwidth, similar to a peer-assisted CDN
  • Video transcoding – converting source video into different resolutions and formats, spreading that processing load across the network
  • 3D rendering – distributing Blender rendering jobs across multiple machines

AI and machine-learning workloads aren't part of Edge Node. Those run through a separate piece of software called the EdgeCloud Client, which lets operators rent out their GPU directly to EdgeCloud customers for AI and other compute jobs. Edge Node, by contrast, is built around the video and rendering work described above.

This range of jobs is what makes Edge Node a flexible compute client, rather than a tool built for just one task. It's also why Edge Node sits at the foundation of Theta EdgeCloud. It's the software that lets individual machines become part of the hardware layer underneath the platform.

Thousands of computers around the world have spare capacity sitting unused for much of the day. Edge Node is one of the ways Theta puts that spare capacity to work.
